At the end of the 18th century, the world was rapidly becoming a different place.  The Franco-Prussian Civil War had shown the true power of technology on the battlefield, as tens of thousands of young men and women were slaughtered every battle from auto-guns and urban war machines.  Now, the global market is flooded with armaments; with despotic rulers grabbing what they can and subjecting the people to their rule by violence and fear.  It is a turbulent time across the globe, as old ideas die and revolutionaries rise to take their place.  Yet - this does not halt the progress of science.  The heart of oil, steam, and steel beats on - encroaching on every piece of this virgin Earth with its railroads and fortresses.  As nature becomes a servant to the gods of the machine, so to shall man.
